Stonehouse was referred to as 'Stanhus' in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name is taken from the manor house house, which was built in stone as oposed to the typical wattle and daub constructions of the time
In the fourteenth century, the manor was owned by William De Ow, who was a cousin of William the Conqueror. John Maltravers (one of the masters of the manor) was forced to flee the country when he was found guilty of involvement in the murder of Edward II. The manor house was destroyed by fire in 1908
In the nineteenth century, Stonehouse was involved in the manufacture of bricks
