Tewkesbury is located at the meeting point of the rivers Severn and Avon and also tributaries of the Swilgate and Carrant Brook. It is an ancient medieval town known to for its Tudor timber framed buildings and numerous historic alleyways
The name 'Tewkesbury' is derived from the name of a Saxon called 'Theoc', who in the seventh century founded a hermitage there
The town is dominated by the twelfth century Norman Tewkesbury Abbey. A major battle was fought to the south of the abbey in 1471 between the houses of York and Lancaster in the Wars of the Roses. The Battle of Tewkesbury was won by Yorkist forces of Edward IV
Tewkesbury holds a number of traditional festivals including the Water Festival, Mop Fair and the Medieval Fayre and Battle Re-enactment
