Kingswood Abbey at Wotton-under-Edge was founded in in the twelfth cantury, but only the sixteenth century Cistercian gatehouse remains
A beacon was sited on top of Wotton Hill in the late sixteenth century to warn of the approach of the Spanish Armada. The hill overlooks the town, and in the nineteenth century trees were planted on the top of the hill to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo
